Join Ingrid Keys at the Laguna Atascosa Visitor Center for a Wild Friends Storytime! This month we will be reading the book: Butterflies are Patient and doing a craft.
This course is designed for novice or young hunters, ages 9 years and above. The course covers the core competencies of firearm and hunting safety, hunting ethics, and wildlife conservation. All materials are provided. The Hunter Education Classroom Course lasts a maximum of 6 hours of classroom instruction. Th time does not include registration, breaks, test administration, and certification card distribution. Courses are offered across the state year round and are taught by certified volunteer instructors. Pre-registration is required. Check with the instructor for directions and any special instructions prior to going to class. Upon successful completion, you may receive a temporary card from the instructor. You may legally hunt with a valid Texas hunting license and your temporary certification card. Your permanent Texas Hunter Education certificate card will be available for downloading and printing from our account profile. Additionally, there will be a drawing for a chance to win a hunt at the Refuge for exotic nilgai (you must be between the ages of 13 and 17 to qualify for this drawing). Join Emily Lopez for a guided bike ride on Steve Thompson Wildlife Drive. The surface will be mostly paved, but rough. Off-road or hybrid bikes required.
Meetup at the Visitor Center.

Join the Friends for a 14-mile guided bike ride at the Bahia Grande with Emily Lopez! It will be on caliche road and a slow pace for wildlife watching.
This will be a 14-mile round trip ride, and even though it will be at a slow pace for wildlife watching, please be prepared to physically bike that distance. Please bring a tire repair kit and plenty of water. Unfortunately, there are not any restroom facilities on this route, so please plan accordingly.
The bike ride will start from the gate on Hwy 48 marking the entrance of the Bahia Grande Unit of Laguna Atascosa. It will then run all the way to the other entrance gate to the Bahia Grande Unit, which is off of Hwy 100, and back.
DIRECTIONS: From Port Isabel – Go on Hwy 48 towards Brownsville. Go approximately 4 miles and look for a sign in the right hand side that says Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge- Bahia Grande Unit. Look for the red gate.
From Brownsville – Go on Hwy 48 towards Port Isabel. Look for a sign in the left hand side that says Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge- Bahia Grande Unit. It's approximately 3 miles after the Jaime Zapata Boat Ramp. Look for the red gate.
